Where America buys sneakers

The best sellers look the same everywhere. What each place buys more of than the rest of the country does not. We mapped 383,816 GOAT resale sales with a delivery address from this summer, and 3.9 million from 2025, to find every state's signature shoe.

The map

Every state has a signature shoe

This map holds 383,816 GOAT resale sales delivered to a US address from July 1 to September 30, 2026. Across the country the best sellers are the same few pairs: the Air Jordan 5 ‘Black Carolina’ led with 8,337 sales.

So we asked a different question: what does each place buy more of than everyone else? A state’s signature shoe is the model it buys most out of proportion to the rest of the US. 40 of 51 states (with DC) have one we can call; the darker the state, the stronger its lean. Circles are the 31 biggest cities.

New York

The Air Max 95 is New York’s shoe

New York City bought 770 pairs of Nike Air Max 95s this summer: 3.6% of its 21,440 sales, against 1.6% in the rest of the country. That is 2.3x the national rate, across 85 different 95s.

It is not a summer fad. In 2025 the city bought 3,882 pairs, 3.1x the national rate. It is New York State’s signature shoe too (1.9x). In the city itself only the Air Jordan 9 leans harder (2.8x), on 227 pairs.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia buys Vans

Ninety miles south, the lean is Vans. Vans Old Skools were 7.9% of Philadelphia’s sales, 4.4x the rest of the US (314 pairs), led by the Old Skool 36 ‘Souvenir’ pack. Its strongest lean of all, on fewer pairs, is the Salomon XT-6 at 5.0x.

The Old Skool is a city shoe up and down the East Coast: Atlanta bought it at 3.4x the national rate and Washington, DC at 2.8x.

In the Deep South, more than half are Jordans

Switch the map to brand share and a region lights up. Air Jordan took 59.4% of Mississippi’s resale sneaker sales (95% interval 57.7% to 61.0%) and 58.4% of Alabama’s, against 40.6% nationally.

In 2025 it was the same: 53.2% in Mississippi vs 38.1% nationally. At the other end, Delaware was 25% Jordan this summer.

Boot season

Boot season starts up north

Timberland’s 6-inch boot is one of the week’s fastest-rising shoes. Last year its share of located GOAT sales went from 0.27% in May to 1.20% in November; this September it was already 1.08%.

UGG’s Classic Mini boots show where the cold-weather buying starts. In September they were 0.22% of US sales, but 0.59% in Massachusetts (19 of 3,201 sales, 2.9x the rest of the US), against 0.06% in Texas and 0.03% in Florida.

What’s rising

The fastest riser is a DMV shoe

The Nike Air Bakin sold 435% more on GOAT and StockX in the week to September 29 than the week before. Its buyers are not spread out: in September it was 4.4% of Washington, DC’s sales (25x the rest of the US) and 1.8% of Maryland’s (12x), against 0.19% nationally.

What this shows, and what it does not

Most of America buys the same resale sneakers. This summer the Air Jordan 5 ‘Black Carolina’, the Air Jordan 4 ‘Rare Air’ and the Travis Scott Air Jordan 1 Low were near the top almost everywhere. Local taste shows up in the second tier: the shoes a place buys at two, three or four times the national rate, like New York’s Air Max 95, Philadelphia’s Old Skools and the Deep South’s Jordans.

This is one marketplace. GOAT is a big share of US sneaker resale but not all of it, and delivery addresses include stores, resellers and package forwarders: a few very large ratios (Delaware, Portland) come from a handful of shoes bought in volume, so read those with care. It describes what sold; it is not a forecast or buying advice.

Questions

What are the most popular sneakers by state?

By sales, the same pairs lead almost everywhere: from July to September 2026 the Air Jordan 5 'Black Carolina' was the top resale sneaker on GOAT nationally (8,337 sales). What differs is each state's signature shoe, the model it buys most out of proportion to the rest of the US. In the biggest states: California: Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 (1.8x); New York: Nike Air Max 95 (1.9x); Texas: Yeezy Boost 350 (1.6x); Florida: Nike Dunk (1.4x); New Jersey: ASICS Gel-Kayano (1.6x); Pennsylvania: Vans Old Skool (2.1x); Georgia: Vans Old Skool (2.2x); Virginia: adidas Adistar Jellyfish (2.2x). The map shows all of them.

New York State's best sellers from July to September 2026 were the YZY YS-01 'Black' (670), the Bad Bunny x adidas Ballerina 'Vivid Red' (583), the Air Jordan 5 Retro 'Black Carolina / UNC' 2026 (580) GOAT sales; its signature shoe, the model it bought most out of proportion to the rest of the US, was the Nike Air Max 95 (1.9x the national rate, 1,040 pairs). Where do people pay the most for resale sneakers?

The highest typical (median) sale price from July to September 2026 was in Alabama ($163), the lowest in Utah ($126); the US median was $149. This mostly reflects what people buy (Jordans cost more than runners), not higher prices for the same pair.

Method. Completed GOAT sales with a US delivery city and state, recorded by SneakerPulse; footwear only, cleats excluded, sales between $0 and $30,000. Two windows. July 1 to September 30, 2026: 383,816 sales. GOAT stopped publishing buyer locations on February 20, 2026 and resumed in July 2026 for its roughly 1,500 best-selling shoes only, so this window covers popular pairs, and every place is compared with the rest of the US on those same shoes. January 1 to December 31, 2025: 3,949,814 sales across GOAT’s whole catalogue. A model is GOAT’s own model name (the families data/trending.json uses). Over-index ratio: a model’s share of a place’s sales divided by its share in the rest of the US. A model counts only with 30+ sales in the place, from 3 or more different shoes with none above half the count (so one bulk buyer cannot make a trend), and an exact binomial test against the rest-of-US share that survives Benjamini-Hochberg correction (q < 0.05) across every place and model with a higher share than the rest of the US in the window (1,240 tests this summer, 460 passed; 4,614 and 2,214 in 2025). The signature shoe is the passing model with the highest ratio among those with at least 1% of the place’s sales. Places need 300+ sales to be shown. Typical price: median sale. Brand share: Wilson 95% intervals. What’s rising: models from our weekly trending list (GOAT and StockX, 2026-09-23 to 2026-09-29 against the week before); the map shows each model’s share of a state’s located sales from September 1 to 30, 2026, tested against the rest of the US the same way (138 tests), and the seasonal line uses its monthly share in 2025. New York City combines the five boroughs’ delivery towns, as in our NYC post; other cities are the delivery city as GOAT records it. Wilmington, NC is left out because the feed files every Wilmington under North Carolina. Data: JSON (free to reuse with credit). Query: tools/stories/map_query.py.
