The Sleeper Sale
Most sneakers sell again and again at about the same price. Some sell so rarely that one pair, in the right size, can sell for several times as much. We counted how often that happens, and when.
By Alexander Isom · · GOAT sales January 1, 2026 to September 24, 2026

The rarer the shoe, the wilder the sale
For every sneaker we took its usual price (the median of all its sales) and asked how often a sale came in at twice that or more. The shoes that sell least spike 4.7 times as often as the busiest.
Share of sales at 2x the shoe’s usual price or more. A busy shoe has a well-known price, so a stray sale stands out less; a rare one has a thin market where one buyer can set the price.
It is usually a big size
Big sizes are scarce, so the buyer who needs one pays up. Sizes 14 and up spike far more often than the middle of the size run, at every level of how often a shoe sells.

A sale is not a price. One pair selling at $950 when the shoe usually sells at $100 can be a real sleeper, a different condition (GOAT sells used pairs too) or a data quirk, and we cannot tell which from the sale alone. Round numbers are a hint: 90 of the 1,348 sales at 3x or more sit on round prices of $1,000 or more (multiples of $250), and the rates in this story barely move when those are removed (1.86% versus 1.90% for the rarest shoes). Rare may mean not yet loaded. A shoe whose history is only partly fetched looks like a rare seller, and our sales record is still filling in for some listings. Prices are past sales, not a forecast and not buying advice.
Questions
Why do some sneakers sell for far more than usual in one size?
Large sizes are scarce and a buyer who needs one has few options. In GOAT sales from January 1, 2026 to September 24, 2026, sizes 14 and up sold at twice the shoe's usual price or more 6.1% of the time for shoes with 20-59 sales, versus 1.2% in sizes 9.5-11.5. A single sale can also be a data quirk, so treat any one sale as a hint, not a price.
Are rarely sold sneakers worth more?
Not usually. Their typical price is what the middle sale says. What changes is the spread: 1.9% of their sales are at twice the usual price or more versus 0.4% for the busiest shoes, Past sales, not a forecast.
Method. Completed GOAT sales recorded by SneakerPulse, UTC days January 1, 2026 to September 24, 2026 (our backfill check marks GOAT complete through September 24; sizes exist only on GOAT, not StockX), sales of $20 to $30,000 with a size, footwear only, cleats excluded, duplicate rows dropped (same listing, size, amount and minute).
Listings need 8+ sales in the window (16,712 listings, 2,110,564 sales). A listing’s usual price is the median of all its sales in the window; a spike is a sale at 2x that or more. Intervals are Wilson 95%. The size table uses shoes with fewer than 60 sales; sizes 6 and under, 6.5-9, 9.5-11.5, 12-13.5 and 14 and up.
